Leigh Griffiths has admitted that the moment he heard of the interest from Celtic, he always wanted to sign no matter what – and one of the first things he did was pull up Neil Lennon about comments he made.
As Neil Lennon was annoyed that none of his players were in the nominee list of Young Player of the Year or Player of the Year, and said none of them would make it in his team.
Leigh Griffiths spoke to Si Ferry on the OpenGoal show, he said: “I think it was from the start to the middle of December my agent said to me ‘Celtic are interested in you, just keep plugging away, training well and if you want to go I’ll try get you out’.
“I think in January there were two or three bids rejected and I think they were coming in with a final one and part of my deal was that I wouldn’t get my bonus if Wolves were promoted.
“I was like ‘fair enough, I don’t really care, just let me go’.”
He added: “I had went to Celtic Park and got driven from there up to Lennoxtown and it was Joe Ledley’s last day as well before he signed for Crystal Palace.
“I had gone into the changing room and was shaking the boy’s hands and that was the last time I seen Joe.
“But it wasn’t until I got changed and had done my running that he [Lennon] said ‘We know you can score goals but look at what Gary done and we think you can do similar to Gary.’
“And I was like ‘I’ve scored goals throughout my whole career, I’m not going to stop now. I’ll get more opportunities to score goals here and that’s what I’ve done.
“I’ll always back myself to score goals but it was just the nature of Gary’s goals. He’d done it in the Champions League and the Europa League and everywhere else.
“I just thought do what you can do and when you get the opportunity in these big games you need to take them. It wasn’t until we got to the Champions League with Brendan that I managed to get my first goal.”
When he first signed he could not resist asking Neil Lennon about comments he made prior to his signing.
He said: “I remember before the Scottish Cup final I was up for Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year and it was at a time where Celtic had cruised the league and got into the last 16 of the Champions League but none of their players were up for Player of the Year.
“And Lenny was raging and came out in the press saying ‘none of the nominees would get in my side’. And then he buys me seven months later!
“I reminded him when I signed and he said ‘that was just tongue in cheek, you were always coming here’.”
