Alan Brazil has leaped to the defence of Celtic gaffer, Neil Lennon after the embarrassing 4-3 defeat against Cluj.
Fans had problems with the fact Lennon put Callum McGregor out at left-back – but Alan Brazil just refused to criticise him.
He said on his radio show: “I’m gutted that we don’t have the Champions League group stage because it’s money.
“It’s money for Celtic to thwart the Rangers challenge, and there is a challenge this year without a doubt.
“And who’s to say they don’t get knocked out of the UEFA Cup as well? When you talk about a European run and you start thinking ‘How far can we go?’, Celtic can’t go, not against the creme de la creme of Europe.
“Ajax are the only side that don’t spend big money and can do well. Forget the rest. Have a look at the European quarter-finals, semi-finals, finals – it’s all big money teams.
“Celtic don’t have that money, so in a way we lose the group stage money and that is a big blow financially, but I just want Celtic to concentrate and beat Rangers again.
“But to concede four goals at home, come on. I like Neil. I heard one of the Celtic supporters saying ‘Ah, I didn’t want him back’, and yeah fine, but who did you want back?
“Neil Lennon knows what Celtic’s all about, so I’m not going to slag Neil Lennon off, no chance.
“I’m just disappointed that it was no massive surprise. I thought it was a tough game, but to concede that many goals at home on a big European night…I was there as a boy standing in the jungle, watching glorious games.
“It blew me away. I thought ‘I want to be a footballer’ because of those games in the ’60s and ’70s. So it’s a big disappointment.”
