Celtic should re-sign Forster says former Celt

Former Celt and SkySport pundit, Charlie Nicholas has said Celtic should sign Fraser Forster, as a solid replacement for Scott Bain who has been “exposed” so far this season.

Forster who had a highly successful time at Celtic under Neil Lennon, before moving to Southampton for £10m.

Writing in his column

“Neil Lennon needs to make a goalkeeper his number one signing priority.

“If I were the Celtic manager, I would be doing all I could to get Fraser Forster back to the club.

“We saw further evidence of the need for the goalkeeping position to be urgently addressed at Motherwell.

“Scott Bain is the first-choice after he was preferred by Brendan Rodgers because he could handle the back-pass better than Craig Gordon.

“Lennon, however, has made it clear that he is more interested in his goalies keeping the ball out of the net.

“Bain has been badly exposed already this season and, with Craig Gordon running down his contract, he is not the answer.

“Celtic need more of a presence between the sticks and Forster, for me, is perfect.

“Neil took him from Newcastle for £2m in 2012 after two loan spells and turned him into an England goalkeeper before he sold him back to the Premier League in a £10m move to Southampton two years later.

“Forster now finds himself third choice at St Mary’s and Southampton are desperate to get him off the books, so surely there is a deal to be done?

“If Lenny can speak to him and be convinced that he has not been scarred by his decline in fortunes over the last couple of seasons, I would go for him.

“The only issue for me would be the finances and whether Celtic would want to do things on a budget.

“If that is the case, then the likes of Aberdeen keeper Joe Lewis would come into the equation.

“He has proved himself to be one of the top goalkeepers in Scotland.

“But Celtic shouldn’t be scrimping and scraping.

“They got £25m for Kieran Tierney, so let the manager use some of that money to really strengthen his team.

“Lenny clearly has the basis of a very good squad, judging by how they’ve started the season.

“It is not as easy on the eye as Brendan Rodgers’ teams but I think they are now more dynamic and clinical.

“Now the board needs to help Neil bring in a bit more quality.”
